Collected my engine yesterday after having it rebuilt for this season, the guy advised me to change the oil more often as the oil that was lying in the casings was very fine and black, I change my oil and filter every other meeting and the oil in the casings had only done two races, told him this and he said I might be running the wrong oil???
I use Castrol Power 1 Racing 10w 30 fully syn. |

We have always used Silkolene Comp4 10w/40 in our race engines with no issues.

should it not be 10w/40, not 10w/30?

TBH it wouldnt make that much difference going from a 10w/40 to a 10w/30. Its just the hot viscosity that changes and not by a huge amount. You could run a 0w/20 but you would see a wear increase in certain components. Only really ideal if your pulling the motor down constantly.
In my Supersport bike the oil chemist at Silkolene has recommended I change to a Pro 4 Fully Synth, same with Steve's SV as the Fully Synth is better able to cope with the heat cycles, he also said something in chemist tech speak!. On our own two bikes we will try that. Steve has just said to me that if the motor your running was out of a road bike you often get very dirty oil after the first few changes as road motors tend to sit with old oil in the cases for longer periods and it takes a fair number of changes for it all to be cleaned out. It was an oil lab at National Grid running through samples from the transformers that used or had housed PCB oils. It was pretty nasty stuff TBH as oils used in the transformers had PCB's added as a fire retardant. Trouble is PCB's are the gender bending cancer causing chemicals that are now floating around causing polar bears to change sex!. Also used to run tests to see if there are any dangerous gas increases which could cause the station to go up in flames.
I did wear gloves...lots of them ![]() ![]() |
