Default Snapped generator cover bolt.

Hi guys,

Was tightening the bolts in the gasket cover (left hand side) and one snapped off any ideas how to get it out?

Also after taking all the bolts out from this cover I still can't get it off, I'm trying to see where leaking oil is coming from

Is it a curvy or pointy m8, and when you say left side you are meaning the side with the gear level and not the rear brake yer? (reason I ask is that if it's a curvy they normally leak from the right, rear brake side and the oil can sometimes roll down the underside of the engine and make it look like it's coming from the other side.)

did you snap the bolt putting it in or taking it out? did it snap inside the cover or is there a stub sticking out? (if there is have you tried piers or moll grips to get it out?)

Easiest thing to do to find an oil leak (bit late now) is to clean everything and cover the area in talc, they so up nice and easy then after an hour or two.

The LHS one is held on by the magnetic force of the rotor inside. Get a knife and GENTLY put try to push it into the crack at the top between the engine case and the cover. Once you've got that wiggled in, keep wiggling other, slightly larger things in around it and eventually you'll be able to pull it off.

If the bolt's snapped just so the head's sheared off, once you've got the casing off you should be able to just remove the stub by hand - there's nothing keeping tension on the threads so it should just screw out.

I'd be careful wiggling knives about. They generally come off by hand if not with a tap with a mallet to break the seal.

Did you take the LH cover off and put it back on again without replacing the gasket? If so you may have torn the gasket, which is the source of your leak. Also find out torque settings, covers like this shouldn't need bolts doing up so tight the heads come off (unless there is some damage).

Didn't manage to get the cover off just undid the bolts and after some tugging and failing to get the cover off I put the bolts back in and overtightened causing it to snap

Could the leaking oil be caused by surplus oil running everywhere after coming down on its side and it actually hasn't even got a leak as such? It came down on left hand side and there are scrapes on the generator cover. the oil leak at first I thought was coming from the clutch cover but perhaps it was running across?

Do what Neeja says to get it out, I snapped one on the clutch cover over tightening it, I brought a torque wrench the day after lol. my bolt came out fine after I removed the cover as it wasn't tight in, I had snapped it against the metal sleeve through the bolt holes in the clutch cover. Replace the bolts with any old correct length stainless ones and do the torque settings correctly. if it still leaks then clean everything and use talc to find the leak. if it's the correct seal then maybe a bit of the loctite gasket sealant? not sure on the seal on that side but on the clutch side with the o-ring I finally fixed my leak with it.
