Default Throttle not closing automatically.

Hey folks,

I am pretty new to this site and biking all together really had my curvy sv for a year now and i absolutley love it. I have a question though relating to my throttle, i take it for an mot the throttle nedds to retract automatically? what is strange is that it retracts fine when the bike is not running but when it is running it partialy retracts but not fully is this to do with the carb?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Ok thanks very much for the advice, I will have a little look at her next weekend then. I will be using it on a daily basis soon so I guess basic maintenance like that will have to be done more regularly.

No point oiling them now, as the low friction lining has worn out. Might as well buy needs leads, mine was he same, oiling did sod all. Grease the unprotected part of the he new cables(s) Make sure there is play in he cables too, so the tension is released when throttle is off.

You should never need to 'oil' cables, if you do you should be aware that most are nylon lined and nylon swells with (mineral) oil meaning you end up with a vicious circle of having to keep oiling them. Just keep the ends (lightly) greased and all should be fine.

I've never lubed a cable since owning an 80's two-stroke 50! My VFR has had one throttle cable in 74k (47k while I've had it), my SV one clutch cable in 27k (actually due to the aftermarket clutch lever wearing slowly through it) and one throttle/return (rubbed through the outer, rusted and started to stick).

Something like a nice bit of vegetable oil if you really must.

As for the throttle returning there are four possible issues that may make it slow.
1) Too tight return cable.
2) Dirty throttle tube
3) Trapped or kinked cable
4) Worn out/rusty cable

First thing I'd do is take the throttle tube off, clean it inside, clean the bar, use a tiny touch of oil on the bar (do not use grease, its too sticky) and make sure everything is adjusted correctly.

5) Check bar-end is not fouling the end of the grip (I had this kind of worked like cruise control) Should be reasonable gap between bar-end weight and the throttle grip.
6) If you have heated grips make sure cable route is not adding drag.

Good points, I had assumed that this was a standard setup (in which case 5 & 6 should be impossible).
