Default Pounds or Euros

My wife is traveling to GB for the first time, with her sis and some friends. She has asked me if she should take a few hundred pounds along (not me, cash money).

What is best for her to have as currency, Pounds, or Euros?

Thanks in advance for your sage advice. I haven't been in Europe since 1974, and currency just isn't the same these days.

Pete

Hello Pete

We use pounds here!!! I don't think there are any plans to change, I sincerely hope not Euros are for much of the rest of Europe (including Ireland) - but not Switzerland, they still use the Swiss Franc. If wifey is going to France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and so on - then she'll need some € as well.

Thanks you all for your help, I do appreciate your kind responses. I will find a local bank that has some pounds for exchange.

Hopefully, I can make the next trip to GB.

Thank you again. Pete

Just to clarify this, Northern Ireland is Pounds too, Southern Ireland is Euros.

Hi Pete, think you have the answer already. You can use a credit card pretty much anywhere (Amex isn't taken very widely though), and you'll probably find that whoever you bank with has an agreement with one or more UK banks that you can withdraw pounds Sterling from cash machines here using your own US bank card. She can always change dollars for pounds here if she runs out though, plenty of travel agent shops around plus banks of course.
