I was pulled over a couple of months ago for having a small plate on my CBR. The Policeman duly gave me a £60 fine, which I accepted (yes, I fitted it & yes I did know that it wasn't legal, so I'm not having a go at the officer).
Today, I have received this letter from the DVLA.....Be warned, you could have your number withdrawn. I changed mine straight after the incident, but they want BSI numbers & where I bought it from, could be a problem as it's the original 1996 plate. I will note it & see what happens. ![]() |

cool they have technically fecked up as a motorcycle has no front number plate. if they do withdraw the plate then there is no stopping you applying for a private one, after all they admit its a recognition mark for taxation and enforcement laws and nothing more.
write to them and tell them they have made a mistake as you have no front number plate ![]() |

you could also just say the bike came with the plate so you don't knoww here it came from?
also what's stopping you just putting the small plate back on after you've taken a picture? |

When was the bike you had it displayed on registered.
If its pre 2000 you don't have the same rules as post. You Useuly only get that if you do something like make a 13 look like a B.

The requirement is to supply proof of the new compliant plate. There is no legal requirement to provide info on supplier of illegal plate, it is a request made to look like a demand.

The regs for 2001 and earlier are totally different to the current scheme. You don't have to have the following on Suffix plates: - BS Mark (BS AU154d) but most makers will set the plate so it will be on there. The reg came in with the Local Memory tag reg system - Makers Mark or post code - Borders can be a minimum of 10mm (at the widest point) as long as the text face is 79mm high (44mm wide max) and spaced 10mm apart. - EU symbol is optional (reg came in 1998 that it needs to be displayed or GB sticker otherwise) Col, you've seen the plate I've got on the bike that is over compliant (got markers mark and post code)

My 1985 C90 has an alloy plate with the numbers stuck on, and they aren't even stuck on straight. It was supplied by the dealer from new like this and has no BS or other legality or conformity markings on it.
When I get a plate for my 1979 TS250 it will be the same kind of arrangement because it's more in keeping with the bike's age and appeal. I'm not putting a modern perspex one on it. |

It's a 1996 CBR600 & I have since fitted the original plate. Thanks for the advice re the BS marks etc. I have photographed it & will stick it in the post today.
The small plate was only .5 inch smaller than normal, but I did put the UK flag on it & a border, so the numbers were quite small. |

Its the number size and font that are important.
Not the plates physical size. Read the Mot manual .its available on line.
