Default Flicking kick stand knocks bike into gear

Hello,

My bike has started knocking into 1st gear when i raise the kickstand - has anyone else experienced this? It's not all the time, but every now and then, maybe 1 in 10 starts.

I've recently adjusted the chain (to 20mm - 30mm as directed, I've double checked!) but other than that nothing else has changed.

It's getting pretty irritating, as yesterday the bike stalled as I raised the stand, throwing me off the bike as I wasn't prepared for it!

I can loosen the chain, but run the risk of it being too loose. Other than that I'm not sure what to check?

Thanks!

Maybe because it was already in gear when you raised stand

Thanks for the helpful comment however, my eyesight is good enough to be able to tell when it is in neutral!

Try jamming the gear pedal with something to prevent it moving/play (bit of carboard between the pedal and the bike frame?) when its in neutral and then kick the stand up to see if it still does it for a start.

This will help to rule out if its the actual pedal causing this (unsual though as it takes a fair click for you to get it into 1st)

Are you accidentally tapping the gear lever and putting the bike in gear as you flick the stand? There should be no reason why the bike goes into gear when the stand goes up, theyre quite seperate. The chain should have nothing to do with it at all. So I wouldn't worry about that.
When you're finding the cause, hold the clutch in if you have the engine running to stop the bike lurching/stalling. Or give it a go with the engine off, even better and just watch the neutral light.

My Sprint used to do this when the clutch cable needed adjusting (the lock on the adjustment screw on the lever had worked loose) - once tightened it was fine

Could be a faulty neutral switch, coming on whist in gear? Clutching at staws as people have said no connection with the stand and the gearbox, very strange but will be quite obvious once you find out. good luck,

Thanks all for the comments,
I've been cheating and not starting the bike till I've pulled the side stand up for the last couple of weeks, but I realise this is not a permanent solution!

Will attempt the suggestions above soon and let you know how it goes....
