I hope I havn't posted this in the wrong section.
I have the itch to sell my SV and buy something different, either a gsxr, cbr, or vfr but im afraid i might regret it. Iv had my K5 Sv for a year and a half and iv been toying with the idea of changing for about 6 months now. I was wondering if anyone else has changed recently to one of these bikes and if so what are their thoughts, any regrets etc? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. |

Well the bikes you listed are an entire different ball game compare to the SV imo. The main question in my mind would be: What do i want from a bike. The SV is comfortable, fun and a V-twin. Where as the position of a Cbr or Gsxr would be much more radical, therefore if you commute you may regret this or love it.
Had a Go on a mates CBR which was awsome great fun and quicker than the SV clearly. However he then said he would rather my SV as he commutes on the cbr, and i commute on the SV. Maybe go take a test ride on one or something? Also what makes u want to chnage the SV? The othewr factors are insurance if you dont like paying alot more than you would on the SV. Then again this depends on age and experience etc. But the difference for be between a SV and a gsxr is Double. But what bike is more a personal choice rather than a "on paper decision" Last edited by Murph; 17-09-11 at 02:43 PM. |

i've been toying wit the same.
if i was to change to an i4, a fazer600 is a very safe bet - compared to the sv, the fzs is very very easy. if i was going twin again, i want a TL! but thats down the line i hope! |

Cheers Murph, yeah iv been asking myself the same question, what exactly do i want from a bike. I dont commute to work on it coz its 160 mile return journey and i carry too much with me but I ultimately want to do a bit of touring. I just fancied a change out of pure "divilment" to be honest! Im 5'9" (just about!) so comfort wise i dont think any of them would be a problem.
Appreciate your thoughts. |

@ kaimera
the fazers are supposed to be lovely! regarding the TL, i dunno, im not a fan of having a twin that size, just a personal thing but i wouldn't like any more engine braking than what you get on the sv650. |

I switched from my SV to a K5 GSXR 750 in 2006, I wrote down how it felt to change not long after I had swapped in this thread
http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=68792 Dont know if its useful or not. As for regretting it, well if you dont try you wont know. Personally I never have. It does everything my SV did just as well if not better.

I4 ss are great. smooth, easy to ride and have that big grin factor when they start to sing and most have all the trick bits from the start.
the SV in standard guise is crap but has potential. release that potential and it's and absolute gem of a bike. nice v2 motor that you don't have to 'keep on the boil' with oodles of grunt and forgiving when you mess up. best advice is to go try as many bikes as possible. |

1. Just buy something else when you feel the SV is lacking 2. Spend cash on the SV For me I was bored of the SV and I wanted something else. The other thing I had to factor in was that money I would have spent on the SV ( suspension upgrades etc ) was money I could just put towards the GSXR I eventually bought. I really think theres no right answer and its purely down to personal choice. I personally dont think you'd ever make the SV I had as good to ride as the GSXR I have now is. Even if you threw money at it. It wouldnt feel the same and thats down the characteristics of the engine as well as the chassis. I love the IL4 feel. The other option if wanting to keep a small capacity V twin that has plenty of poke, bling bits and handling to boot is the 749S that keeps the GSXR company in our garage. But I know that Ducati's reputation puts alot of people off going down this route, but its not been as expensive in our case as I thought it woudl be...

The FZ1s are awesome, the FZ6 OTOH are fizzing bland things with "meh" handling and an annoying noise, same whiny engine noise like an old R6. They're "alright" but no better than any other castrated 600.

I could buy GSXR, but I'm not convinced I'd live very long given a serious addiction to ragging the snot out of any bike I own, when out for fun. But get the SV well sorted and you can keep up with the GSXRs most of the time.

I jumped on a Pre V-Tech Viffer recently and was horribly disappointed. The position was awful and the seat felt like a lead plank! The sales guy at Fowlers assured me that this was standard trim and if this is the case, it would have felt like riding a house brick. I am pretty sure it was modded for a short @rse, but they denied it.
My advice would be to try out some other bikes to see what you like. I have just taken delivery of a loan CBF600 and I swear to you that I would have a more exciting time hanging out at an old ladies coffee morning discussing my difficult knitting pattern! Avoid at all costs! I tried a Kwak twin a while back and it was utterly awsome in ways the SV isn't. My ideal choice would be to have them both, but with four bikes in the garage, we really are running out of space! Might be able to fit an old GPZ in there at a push! ![]() |
