Hello All,
I know this post may seem a bit paranoid but my sv is my baby. I just bought my first bike last June. I have a 2004 SV650s. Since I bought it I had a local motorcycle shop do a bunch of mods to the bike. Since then I have a few concerns I hope you can help me address. 1) Last time I changed the oil was October. Since then I've only put about 400 miles on the bike but I've had to add 200ml of oil. Should I be concerned? Could this be a result of the mods I had done in December. I got a dyno, yoshi pipe, and air filter. 2) Can those mods decrease the life of your bike significantly. The performance has increased but I hear there are trade offs. Since I opted to spread out the payments over 5 years I want to make sure I can ride the bike all 5 years. 3) I popped a wheelie and didn't notice I was going down a small hill. The front tire slammed on the ground and I guess the front shocks weren't enough cause I heard something slam together. I visually examined the bike and didn't notice anything loose. The bike drove normally. Should I be concerned or should I get it checked out? 4) I drive the bike like a madman for a newbie. No matter what the condition I pop wheelies all the time in first gear. I go close to red lining almost every time I take off. Might this attribute to the recent oil loss? What other things can I do to try to get the most out of my bike (without sacrificing fun)? |

1. new bikes drink oil when bedding in. You shouldn't be horsing it with wheelies if you've only done that low mileage. If it's not visibly leaking oil (check near front sprocket) then don't worry. The age dictates the parts should be fine.
2. You had the bike remapped properly? Unless you redline it it's not something to worry about. 3. Sounds like the calipers were reseating. Nothing to worry about. 4. I think you'll get grilled for that. The SV is not an R1 and you should refrain from frequently testing to the limit it's relatively low power, crap components and shoddy suspension. Now I read your question number 2 is now answered as it number 1. Greets. |

Greetings mr chops.
Er, sounds like your riding style may have a detremental effect on the longevitey of your bike more than than the mods!! I have had a race can on my sv form about 4 months in from new with now effect. Other than that, ride a little safer ya holligan ![]() |

I wouldn't worry too much, keep riding like that and I doubt your license will last 5 years... Or worse..

So, you've been riding a total of 9 months and already you're a racer. Squids don't last and neither do their bikes. Don't worry, you'll be just fine. ![]() Just stay away from me on the road. Perhaps a scooter would be a better fit your your mature riding approach. |
