i have just bought my first bike... an sv650.
i notice that it doesnt take much forward movement to overcome the side stand, i take this into account when parking.... but worry about it falling over. is this common to SV's???? (mines a t plate) Is there a mod to make it more stable??? (i.e. lump hammer) |

welcome to the unpredicatable world that is the SV side stand, mines an K4 and its no more stable, try not to park downhill, and leave it in gear and pushed forward before you put the side stand down, should the worst happen, its good to know theres always lots of people on here to enjoy your misfortune, and plenty of places to get the bits that break.
ps welcome to the site.... |

I can only comment on the pre K3 sidestand and say that it's one of the best I've seen as regards stability. If you think it's bad you want to try a Ducati!

I think nemo said it all, but everytime i put it on the stand, i think jeez can it take all that weight? I think cos it seems to lean over quite far. I am sure suzuki have made well sure that the stand is strong enough though... i hope...cos i have heard of metal fatigue!

You lot are weird, the K4 stand is absolutely perfect.
I've never had any problems with it, even parking downhill. |

Yet to have any trouble with a K2(s) stand.
That said, it takes some getting used too after owning bikes that always had center stands too. |

I get my bike (K4) in and out of the garden via an alleyway with a downslope of a few degrees, and can't get in or out by going up the slope... am always concerned that it looks pretty close to passing the point of no return but it's never gone over in 2 months of daily use.
I reckon a good bump or knock would do it, though I'm not planning to test that theory out... |

The bike can tip a lot further than the side stand allows before it starts to tip. I was told to use it to oil my chain:
On side stand Pull a bit so the back wheel comes off the floor Rotate the wheel and oil (takes two people obviously...) Never even felt like it was going to fall... Always wanted to tip back to safe, and took a lot of effort to get it to tip at all. Of course always remember to be wary of leaving out of gear and pointing downhill. Learnt that with my GPZ500s. Broke the indicators twice with that ![]() ![]() Stu |

Never had a problem with a k2 stand, Im a bloater, over 16 stone
![]() Dont park downhill, that goes beyond the laws of physics ![]() Just watch how most dealers move bikes around the showroom. They use the stand to pivot the bikes into small spaces. However if you are parking in a field or on soft ground, use a puck as the footprint is quite small |
