Default First Aid training for bikers - get some -NOW!!

Here is an unashamed 'rip-off' of a posting on ride-out.com, I think it says it all. If you can't honestly say you know exactly what to do if your mate comes a cropper, then get yourself on one of these courses.

(see the original posting at : http://www.ride-out.com/discus/messa...tml?1117322338)

The ‘First Bike on Scene’ course has been specifically designed by Lancashire Ambulance to provide the knowledge and skills needed to deal with the initial management of a patient involved in a road traffic accident. Bikers are encouraged to give casualties necessary basic life support in the event of an accident whilst waiting for emergency services to arrive.

Courses are delivered to groups of bikers, usually a maximum of 12 at our Ambulance HQ training centre in Preston. The location is ideal for groups of riders who wish to make a day of it. The training centre is just off the A6 near the M55 and is only a 30 minute ride out to either Devils Bridge, Blackpool or Rivington Barn; favourite north west biker meeting places.

Courses are priced per person at the Training centre in Preston, however they do have the ability to deliver training courses to groups of motorcyclists throughout the UK.

Course Content:

Introduction & Administration
Trauma & the mechanism of injury
Protecting the scene & snatch rescue
Introduction to Basic Life Support
Lunch (provided along with refreshments)
Basic Life Support practical
Spinal management
Removal of the crash helmet
Course closure

Dates for 2005 from Preston are:

Saturday 18th June
Saturday 30th July
Friday 26th August
Friday 23rd September
Saturday 24th September
Friday 21st October
Saturday 22nd October
Thursday 24th November
Sunday 27th November
Sunday 4th December
Monday 5th December

This is a very impressive course and highly recommended. Don't have your riding pal have an accident ..... and then you don't know what to do!

The course is £45, but worth every penny .... I should know as I've done it! .... plus the lunch is free

Know what you mean. I finally bit the bullet on the IAM thing, went to the intro session and met my observer last week.

The course I mentioned in my previous post (which is stickied at the top of this board) covers all the same stuff as the Lancashire one. But it's free, and run by MAG. Oh, and its in Leeds, on the right side of the border.

BTW, I heard a rumour that motorcyclists contribute considerably more to the running of the air ambulance than walkers and horse riders put together, yet use the service less than thos two. Anyone any other info on that?

Mikie,

You are right - most of the courses cover the same ground. THis one has been attended by a few folk on the forum and they found it very good so I thought it was worth a post.

As to the proportion of usage, I'm sure that bikers do contribute a goodly amount. Walkers are very heavily targetted, with every outdoor shop having a collecting box, don't know about princess annes friends .

I've worked with a couple of the helicopters over the years and the tasking is done by ambulance control, and typically deploys the helicopter to the most serious injuries, so bikes do tend to get attention however they normally crash somewhere very near to a road so a normal county anbulance can get there. Horse riders are another matter, they have a habit of giving serious injuries and may be not as readily reachable by road.

Walkers get everywhere so although the injuries are (typically) not as serious, they are a pain to get off the hill needing either Mountain Rescue or a helicopter. It is quite common for a helicopter to be tasked to a walker, then re-routed to an RTA because the injuries are more serious.

Now then, sorry for hijacking a little bit there
on a pro MAG tip at the moment

must admit, ive not seen any contribution boxes for walkers, but i do tend to visit more bike shops than hiking shops

i love helicopter rides, but don't fancy one of them
