okay need help yet again!!!
![]() On Thursday I had to call home start out to start bike after it started then stopped and refused to start again there was a noise between efforts but put this down to the bike engine trying to turn over. (noise was difficult to hear with lid on but was a short noise that sounded mechanical) Bike was started by jump leads from very nice mans truck... and then started again at lunch time and was fine to ride home on .. made sure I was in lowest gears with as many revs to keep battery charged. Brought new battery charged and fitted to bike this morning and now it isnt starting.. starter motor is trying to turn over but is still sounding like it isnt charged (starting with all lights off and yes the immoboliser is disengaged.) Have tried to put it in first and rock it back and forth to see if this will restart it..no luck Dont have anyone to be able to jump it again but to be honest cant see that that would solve the problem if it is still not starting on it's own... Suggestions welcome (helpful ones please ![]() ![]() |

where are you? there must be someone close with a bit of knowledge who could come have a look. If you in midlands, could be just the nudge I need to get me bike out....... and bring the multimeter with me......

based in Bristol... already tried testing voltage and the battery is def charged and the voltage across the battery was dropping to about 3 or 4 volts when trying to turn over .

OK 1st check condition of lead from battery to solenoid (the bit that goes click when you hit the start button) Make sure connections are clean and tight. 2nd check lead from solenoid to starter, again should be clean and tight.....in reality you will prob find that connection to starter will be rusty causing high resistance and starter not turning over....... (mine was). If it is be carefull that you dont break the bolt/nut trying to undo it.... give it a blast of wd 40 1st and let it soak for a few mins. When its clean retighten it and cover it with vaseline or similar to help prevent corrosion.
Also check all your cables that run to the frame from the engine and battery (earths) high resistance here from corrosion will als give you a similar problem. Finally if it dont work now............... it may also be a knackered starter......... ![]() Give this lot a go, you never know.... Terry |

johnd ~ thanks for the offer but it isnt loose leads or charging problems as I have managed to eliminate that from line of enquiry...
the starter relay has voltage on input but no output voltage even though it appears to be making a sound when the starter switch is pressed. I am thinking that this means the relay has gone as the engine was turning over when I accidently shorted it ![]() ![]() ![]() The starter motor doesnt look great and i cant get bolt of it to check at this moment it is caked in WD40 ... I am hoping that I have found the problem though in the relay just taken it off the bike and checking if it works.... any suggestions???? ![]() |

When you shorted the solenoid, did the engine spin over normally? or was it still a bit sluggish?

from that it sounds like solenoid is faulty......
or you have bad wiring across the low amperage side of it.... check the earths carefully before you scrap it... Terry |

have used battery charger to close relay and whilst there was def click of closure there was no continuity through the relay itself. Also whilst it was on the bike tried starting it and there was no voltage appearing on the starter motorside of the relay....hopefully makes sense? so fair to say relay fubarrrrreed!!! ![]() ![]() |
