Default Digi Gears

Well Santa visited me and he'd actually read my letter and I got the datatool digigear indicator. Thing is, has anyone ever fitted one of these things and programmed it?

The speedo is driven by the front wheel so I'll need to programme it while riding along the road. I only got the SV in September (a K5) after finally getting ride of my aging GPZ, so I haven't had it apart yet, so I've no idea where the ECU is.

Anyone a DIY genius?

The ECU is behind the battery under the rider's seat.

I was gonna fit one of these (til someone on here called them a 'random number generator,' then I decided against it

You can get a loom plug-in adapter (instead of frying your loom trying to solder the thing in place...) Personally, that's the route I'd take

I believe that the infamous Mr Toad used to have one on his bike. I am sure that he has also refered it to me as a random number generator.

heh, well with a random number generator I'll probably have as much a clue about what gear I'm in as I did before (where is that 7th gear?)

Cheers guys, I'll see if I can find a loom plug in as that would be much easier.

I did indeed refer to it as a random number generator

I'm afraid I can't be much help with fitting, as I got the dealer to fit it for me free of charge when I bought the bike.
However I did 'cut it off' from my old bike before the insurance man got his hands on the wreck, so I have it sitting there ready to fit on my new one - any fitting tips greatfully received

It worked OK when going up and down the gears in a linear fashion, but used to have a little bit of a lag (few secs) between gears, and it used to get very confused if I stopped quickly at traffic lights and popped it into neutral missing a gear on the way.

I got it because I thought it would help riding the bike, being a newbie, but I actually got the hang of working out/remembering what gear I was in from the engine noise. It nearly had me off once - I was slowing down to turn into my road, glanced at the indicator & it said 3rd, so I popped it down to 2nd gear, only to find out I was actually in 2nd already, and the effect of going into 1st and trying to turn through 90 degrees at the same time nearly had me over the bars .

London taxi drivers used to like it - many a time I'd stop at the lights next to a taxi, and down would come the window - "Eer, woz that fing mate"

Hiya mate.

Got one fitted on my K5s and no random numbers at this end. Works a treat and stops me stomping some extra wear into that linkage...

Mine was fitted by the dealer though, so no idea about programming for sure. I believe that the plug in loom is an option only on the ACUMEN unit and not Datatool, but will stand corrected of course.

Looking at their website, I found a "How to" video........and the bikes on a stand, so no movement needed.

http://www.datatool.co.uk/consumer/s...to.php?id=digi

Hope it helps.

Oh, I forgot to mention that you'll need a paddock stand to program it as you'll need to go up and down the gears pressing buttons as you go

try the the Acumen website for more info - http://www.acumen-electronics.co.uk/DG8.html

cheers

Will let you know how I get on (when I get round to it!)

I believe that getting funny readings when stopped etc. is normal as the system works by comparing the speedo signal and the tacho signal, therefore you have to be moving and in gear for it to work.

Once I've done it I'll post how I got on for future DIYers to have a laugh at!

the SV has a gear position switch. I investigated tapping into this to produce a gear indicator and i believe its been done before. Using this would eliminate the problems with the erroneous readings. I never got round to making it though - if there's enough interest i might pick up the project again.
