Default HELP - Dead SV

I was trying to start my 2001 650 tonight. When turning it over (it hadn’t been started for several weeks) every thing went dead. No ignition lights or anything.

I checked the fuses and the main 30amp fuse on the starter motor relay and they were all OK.

The battery still has 12.5 volts across the terminals.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Yep but you need amps as well.

Battery is probably dead, charge it up and test again.

There is no imobiliser on it.

When it died, it was very sudden like a fuse had blown.

Not taking you for stupid r anything but are you sure you checked the fuse under the black vent on the right hand side? There is a aspare there too and i pulled out the spare first and thought i'd better check the other one too just in case and hey presto.

I didnt even know i had a fuse there btw thats why i'm not taking you for being stoopid And how i ever got that bloody plastic cover back on i'll never know.

If the battery has 12.5 v across the terminals then there will be amps. You can't have amps without volts. Its just not possible (so I'm told). It may be the rectifier has gone pop or the main fuse has blown but can't be seen. Try replacing it with a new one, then all you have to do is solve the reason for it blowing. That would probably be the rectifier.

I may, of course, be totally wrong.

That's where I'd look first, it's not been well advertised.

Battery: If your electrics suddenly stop doing anything it's unlikely to be the battery, it may well not be up to much, but it will retire ungracefully by slowing down and generally getting dimmer, not by suddenly quitting. Voltage/Current (volts/amps), you can indeed have one without the other, although voltage is an excellent indicator of battery charge level, but in the case of a 12V automotive battery, if it's giving good voltage it's probably fine, no guarantees though, check it.

Reg/rec: Faults cause charging problems, (so refer to battery above), unless it's suddenly gone dead short across +&- terminals, (most unlikely), which would take the fuse out, it's not the reg/rec.

Also, check the side stand switch.

Does the SV have a clutch switch (don't think my race ones do)?
