Default Dead Can?

Out for 100 mile bimble at weekend and nipped on motorway for a couple of junctions to get home. I checked my mirror to see where my pal was and all I saw was sparks flying behind me. I **** myself!! I pulled over and the inside of my can was glowing bright orange. I took a pic as it was cooling down.

What would cause this? Do I need to replace my can? I was out again the day after and did 125 miles but no problems. All ideas and help greatfully appreciated.

Cool...

Jax 125 did this, looked like someone has thrown a packet of lite cigs down the road. It was just carbon deposits in the can burning off. Though if its a slip on i'd pull the can off and check it over. Might be the packing in the can buring and coming out from a split.

Im thinking the packing might be goosed. The sleeve itself gets much hotter than the cans on other bikes that were out with me (Blueflame on an R6 for instance), almost too hot to touch.

Doesn't look like the packaging. looks like the inner tube is overheating. - unburned fuel ?

Maybe, as it does pop and backfire a little bit, especially when rolling off at about 4k rpm. Its done that for ages though and this has never happened before.

You might have find that your running rich, which has allowed unused fuel to blow out of your can. This might have blown a hole in the can letting some packing out.
Don't worry about the heat to much though, my Remus gets to the same temp as the sun, but the Scorpion is cool as soon at the bike is turned off.

When last on the dyno, about a year ago, it was running a little rich in a couple of spots on the graph. I wasnt too bothered about this. Would have been more concerned if it was lean thats for sure.

Would swapping the end can for a more quality item (Scorpion, Remus etc) help stop the backfiring and hopefully blowing holes in my can!? Im off touring round Scotland in August and would hate to be involved in a can/hole/fire situation!!
