Default top fuel drag cars

was reading some stats on these:

they run V8 engine that produce almost 8000 bhp and have to be rebuilt every run
they accelerate from 0-100mph in less than 1 second
the fuel consumption is about 2 gallons per second
the fuel costs £10 a gallon
the tyres last 2 miles
the driver experiences a force of 5g on acceleration and 8g on braking
they can cover 1/4 mile in just over 4 seconds

and if they don't fire properly then the engine suddenly stops due to hydraulic lock and does bad things to everything.

Go watch - you will be impressed.

And take ear defenders, because your hearing is valuable. You really can't imagine just how loud they are.

Ear defenders are a must!!!!!!!!!

They do 30 gallons per mile!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are htting just under (UK) 300mph at the end of the 1/4. Top fullers in the USA are in the 5's and hitting over 300mph.

Nothing like it, but a quick clip of a funny car dragster. You may get the idea...

It's always impressive when one of these can match/beat Fireforce 1 & 2.

Did anyone go to Santa Pod over the weekend? I did,it was the 'Main Event'!

Been loads of times,I love it,the smell and sting of Nitro fumes, tyre smoke and Kerosine. GREAT!

It was a good day, tried to post some pics, but sadly they are too big methinks!

Fastest time of the day,(Monday) was 4.89secs/287.9MPH.

It was sodding cold though!

There was a good article about these engines in a tech publication I get recently (Engine Technology International).

The cylinder blocks and heads are machined from solid aluminium billet, no coolant (no point, all happens too quickly, cooled by fuel!).

The regs fix the crank to cam centre distance (traditional V8 pushrod design) so you can't make a high cam/short pushrod engine.

Piston rings are worn out in one run.

Regs prohibit fancy electronics for ignition etc.

Clutch slip is designed in for around 2/3rds of the run typically.

As Carsick says, a misfire will result in a hydrauliced cylinder, there's so much fuel going in.

Like they all say, if you've never been, go!

Everybody should go once, just to appreciate the real meaning of LOUD!
It's like someone thumping on your chest as they go past....

When I went there was a tad too much track preperation with various
bits of kit trawling slowly up and down the track...for the largest part of the
day. Although all very necessary I'm sure.

Truely awsome!
