Default Scab Advice

So it’s been a week now and my knees still pretty numb, unbendy and scabby. Repaired the gear lever today (sum total spent 2 quid Cheers for the advice NW & BB) and got back on the bike for the first time, was pretty awkward and a bit painful.

Anyone got any advice on this type of injury? I'm hesitant to stretch it too much too soon but I don’t want to miss the only good weather of the summer.

On the plus side got a new Furygan jacket from those nice people at Hideout to replace the Spyke one that didn't hold up too well in the crash.

My advice would be to try and not to disturb the scabs, otherwise they stay there for much longer. Get some cream to help healing (something with aloe vera) and keep applying it.

It worked for me whenever I fell off my bycycle... god that trip down the asphalt was painfully

It's all about preventing them from splitting and cracking. I always used a touch of petroleum jelly. If possible wear shorts until healed. Bloody sore things arent they fella?

You could always make flexing incisions in the scabs to help with the bending, it worked woth my elbow.

Oh come one now, you know you want to regress to the state of a seven year old and pick it.

Anyone who says they are never tempted to pick a scab is lying I reckon. It's just one of those childhood temptations that stays with us all our lives.

First is that inscidious little bit on the very edge where the skin is all pink and freshly healed just underneath. Just enough to run the edge of a fingernail under. Then just a bit more - then you just have to see how far round it's healed...

... just to relieve that infernal itching of course.

Then it lifts a bit - ooooh that stung, but it's gone now. So you ping it a bit, see if it'll go any further cos it's like, a flappy bit, sitting there, asking for it.

And anyway, what do you care if Mum says if you pick it it'll scar...

... chicks dig scars don't they?!

Almost makes me want to want to injure myself to join in

But I'll resist for now.

As to the riding, stick you leathers on, go for a rider, don't worry about it.

Get back, and have the fun of peeling blood stuck leathers off, hey, worked for me.

Cheers Mark.

Don't pick the scab but the cream is a good idea.

Will fall off when good and ready.

Seriously though, as long as there's no severe internal stuff going on - knackered ligaments, cartalidge etc - then don't pussy about and molly coddle it.

As the man says, either stick you leathers on or not, but just grit your teeth and give it a good swift bend.
Lean against a table, stand on your good leg, bend the bad one as far as it'll go then grab you ankle and give it a sharp tug to get your heel up towards your bum.

Or just steel youself and then suddenly drop down into a sqaut.

It'll stop bleeding eventually, and it'll do you some good in the long run. Afterall, if you act all tender about it and don't bend it then all you're doing is letting your knee joint stiffen up.

Then get out there and enjoy the weather on your bike. You'll soon not notice your knee. When you get back, a nice soak in the bath with soften everything up.

Serious advice: go see the practice nurse at the doctors.
