Default Damping Rod Holes & Emulators

Righto - I have a curvy and have some replacement springs and a set of emulators waiting to be fitted (by me).
It all looks fairly straight forward apart form the issue of the compression ports in the damping rod...

As I understand it there are 4 ports on the standard damper rod and the fitting instructions for the emulators states that a further 2 ports should be created and the existing ports opened up in size.
On a thread I read here there was a suggestion that the additional ports are not required, opening up the existing ports is sufficient.

It appears to me that the additional ports are intended to ensure that these ports do not restrict the flow, thus ensuring that the compression damping is being controlled by the emulator and not the original ports. Am I right so far?

My main question is how many people have drilled the extra holes and how many have not?

For those that have drilled the extra holes (as per the fitting instructions) have they experienced any adverse rebound damping effects at full compression - if so what exactly is it that you experienced?

Thanks Alex

If you haven't read it already, I have taken pictures of my 'modified' rods and posted pics in the following thread (scroll to near the bottom of the first page):-

http://forums.sv650.org/viewtopic.php?t=41526

Mine appear to have had the extra hole/s drilled as I have 6 'ports'.

I can't offer any advice as to if this is the better method though.

However at the end of the day if you want to increase flow, making a bigger pipe (drilling holes out) or adding an extra pipe (drilling additional holes) presuming the proportions are correct, will both effectively achieve the same thing. It is probably easier to enlarge holes rather than create new ones though?
