Default Do these valve clearances sound right?

Just checked my valve clearances and both cyclinders were between 0.10 and 0.15 on the inlet and a slightly tight 0.20 on the exhaust

The guy at sukuki reckoned that the 0.20 was fine, i still slid the gauge in with one hand so no real force was needed the 0.30 wouldn't go at all though, does this sound alright?

Bikes done 20k so far how long is it going to be before new shims will be needed, i know this is very subjective but educated guess would be good.

Cheers

in the manual it states valve clearances should be 0.1 to 0.2 and exhaust clearances should be 0.2 to 0.3 if that is any helpalso there is a chart but you have to know the shim size in mm

Well I reckon 0.20 on the exhausts is due for an adjustment - remember they will only get tighter (worse) with time.

If you have it apart do it now, if not then do it within say 5000 miles.

I still have not checked mine (23k miles and counting), I know I really need to do it soon......

As someone pointed out to me if your valve clearances are within tollerance what the factory are saying is "that'll be fine for x thousand miles, and wont alter by far enough in that time to cause you a problem"

If they're in tollerance geat, close it all up and walk away. If they're out of tollerance and you're going to have the cam shafts out and getting jiggy with the micrometer anyway, then you may as well change them all to be the best they can be.

I think your clearances sound rather healthy.

Remember, that to adjust them is quite an intensive, and fiddly job, so if you're going to do it, you might as well do them all.

At 20,000 miles your exhaust clearances have probably done most of the shifting that they will do, and if you can get the 0.20 feeler in there with ease, then the gap is probably more likely to be 0.23.

Your inlet clearances are closer to the centre of the tollerance range, and this is to be expected.

I checked mine at about the same mileage, and my figures were very similar to yours, however, one of the exhaust valves on my rear cylinder measured 0.18. I changed that, and I'll re-measure in a few thousand miles time. At that point, I may have to do the whole job again - but now I have some experience of doing it.

So, for now, I don't think you need to do anything - but keep an eye on it. Checking them doesn't take long, so give it another go next time you change your oil.
