Default Popping on tickover

2001 curvey with a CCC can. When it's ticking over it gives a solid pop about every 5 seconds like a minii backfire. Bike goes like a train and makes all the usual noises assosciated with a twin with a sports can, but this popping on tick over is getting me a bit worried. Could it be running too rich or bad plugs or anything else that could be a problem? I've tried adding a bit of choke to see if it gets and worse, but did not make a difference.

Also, may be slightly more frequent with super unleaded, but I'm using it all the time now so not sure if this is relevant.

Any ideas?

Is this just when idling at the lights with the bike in neutral/clutch in?

If it happens when changing down, don't worry, it's normal.

It could be a air leak into the exhaust, check to see if any gasses are escaping from the link pipe.

Engine could also be sucking in excess air, it'll pop on tickover if it's doing that.

It is just on tickover. I've tried adjusting it up a bit, but no change. Does it on overrun too, but that's a different noise.

Also does it when it's hot or cold, although slightly less violent when cold.

I have a very slight leak on the link pipe for the can, but just get a light smudge of soot and it passed the MOt like that so doubt it's a big enough leak to cause a problem.

Popping on idle is very bizzare - it shouldn't. Can you record and post?

I now have a soundclip, but can not see how to attach it to the post. Any idea? I can mail it to anyone who is interested. c60k

Get a race can or a road legal with the baffle out. Mine pops likes crazy and it still makes me giggle after 6 months.

Mine did this and after much searching I found that I'd nicked the rubber carb manifold and there was a very slight air leak. At higher revs I think the fuel/air mixture pressure overcame that of the leak and it wasn't a problem. Origianlly I thought it was the result of my home tuning efforts, but it became so irritating that I had to investigate.

When I say nicked what I really mean is that a part of the rubber had gotten pushed under the carb when I put them back on, so that a part of the lip was crimped under the carb instead of around the outside. IYKWIM.
