I seem to be suffering from false neutral syndrome between 4th and 5th. Having done a search, it seems if chain is tensioned correctly, gear lever is set right and pivot greased, then the answer is the stiffer detent spring. But for £85 for it and the arm, it seems quite expensive. Is it worth it for more positive shifts?
Also, if I end up fitting the spring, I was thinking about renewing the clutch friction plates. The bike has only done a little over 16k, but recently I got a little slip when accelerating hard (it was like my own traction control ![]() |

I like the Factory Pro detente spring, good for the lazy of foot, but it's hardly neccesary. It's mainly designed for fast, solid shifts along with the shift star, but it does help for more positive normal shifts. But assuming you've done everything in Andy's link then the best cure's a big heavy foot
![]() Friction plates should, in normal use, last a very long time. Can't recall just now what vlavour of SV yu have- checking the plates is a simple operation on a carbed one, and a ridiculous ******* on the new ones, if I understand the change to the cover right. Carbed ones is 7 bolts to get in, about another 7 to take it out, and a new o-ring at the end.

Do all the tune ups in the thread I linked you to. Some transmissions are just a bit fussier in one set of shifts vs. another. If it's fine except for one gear I usually start by looking at the geometry of the shifter levers. Are those two imaginary lines parallel or not?
Still, it's good practice to check everything properly if you have shifting problems or clutch problems of any sort. Do the basics first since that's the cheapest and easiest things to check. No solution? Then delve deeper. |
