Question Buying bike back after my spill?

It sounds like my insurance company is going to decide that my bike is "beyond economical repair" but I'm sure that I can get it back up-together for far less than the book price. They want to replace the tank as it has a tiny scratch that'll be covered by the fairing, replace the full exhaust due to scratches that'll polish out [or get a nice loud can instead ], and replace one of the forks due to scratches too, none of which I'll worry about at the moment.

Anyone on here bought their bikes back after a spill? If so what's the process and did you have any problems? How is the buy-back value decided etc?

cheers

Jamie

Yes, did it last year. I am with ebike and they work on a straight 40% salvage value, so the bike was valued at £2,500 and I could buy it back for £1,000. They'd only written it off for some minor damage (which they said meant new tank, fairings and can), repairer and assessor both seemed to think everything was still straight and working, so I went for it. Act quickly, mine nearly got sent to a salvage yard without them asking me.

In the end it only cost me £100 to get back on the road, and that was buying new OE bits too. I just changed the broken bits and live with the dents and scratches.

EDIT: Nearly forgot, the tricky bit was that I did have to borrow a bike trailer and pick the bike up myself, it was still with the repairers and they wanted much cash to deliver it to me, which insurance does not cover (I suppose I could have wheeled it ouside then called the AA). And don't send your V5 to your insurers, mine kept asking for it but I just kept fobbing them off, they don't need it if you are keeping the bike.

Mike,

Thanks for the details. The bike is in my garage so no worries about it being scrapped and I've got access to a bike trailer to shift it around as necessary.
