Default 99' curvy oil pressure light? + not going into neutral properly

Hey guys,

Got my 99' SV yesterday shipped from a local dealer for when I pass mod2- started it up a few times just to get a feel for the clutch and responsiveness of the throttle- but I noticed the pressure light was on and has been since I recieved it.

Recently been through its MOT and service with the dealer so there shouldnt be any issies with oil- unless they didnt change it out and its insanely old.

Anyone know some little things I might be missing' first SV and all there may be some quirks.

Also whilst Im here Im having trouble getting into neutral from 1st just pops up to second, takes me a fee attempt as it just doesnt like going into neutral. New gear lever?

The light should come on with the ignition and go out when the engine starts. If that's what you mean then it's normal.

If it's been on while the engine is running that's definitely a bad thing. Check the oil level - hold the bike upright (not on the stand) and check the level in the sight window on right hand side engine case.

Hi mate thanks for the quick reply!

I tried to upload a video but it looks like you cant here.

The light does not go off after turning on the ignition, and I have stood the bike up and let it run for a bit but it is still on.

Its hard for me to see how much oil is in the bike as the sight glass is blocked by the fairing and I need a torch, and the refil cap is insanely hard to unscrew which makes me think when servicing they didnt do an oil change. Ill take a look tomorrow.

Is this dangerous at all? Never had an issue like this before

Cheers!!

The light is an oil pressure warning. SV's don't like running low on oil and by the time the oil pressure light comes on it's often too late and terminal engine damage can be caused.

To be clear, what should happen is - you turn on the ignition with the key and the light comes on. When you pull in the clutch and hit the starter button the engine starts and the light goes out.

If you're sure your oil light has been staying on while the engine is running then don't start it again. Get a torch, take off the lower fairing - whatever you need to do - and check the oil level.

If a dealer sent me a freshly serviced bike with no oil in it they'd be getting it back.

Oh **** I didnt realise it was such a bad thing- no more startups until Ive sorted the issue then!

And yeah I'm a little miffed they sent me it over and I have an issue already! If theres no oil they will be getting a phonecall in the morning >

If like you say it could be terminal then they can have the bike back- ridiculous!

Thanks for your time bud Ill update in the morning

No probs.

There are other potential causes for this but the oil level is definitely the first thing to check.

Hey, had a pain in the **** taking off the fairings today one of my screws' thread is mashed so I cant get the fairing off, and my light wont shine through to the site glass, and in the oil fill theres no dipstick- but i dabbed in a cotton bud and saw there was new oil in at a sufficient level. Still not sure why this is happening- would the oil sensor be stuck?
