right.........
i need to change the bush in the bottom of my shock on my TRIALS BIKE, but i cant undo the bolt, there is no linkage, the shock bolts to the left swing arm, and the allen key bolt is resest in the swing arm (page 6 bolt 6) if anyone can post the picture that might help, i dont know how http://www.betatrialuk.com/images/st...0-270frame.pdf as its an off road bike this bolt spends a certain amout of time underwater & mud. we have soaked it over 2 nights in oil, and tried a allen key socket on a breakerbar & shocking it, which resulted in problem 2 the allen has snapped flush in the bolt head, but as i said the bolt is reset in the swing arm. i dont fancy using heat, as its all ally and may damage the shock? so, i need to 1) get the bit of allen key out 2) undo the bolt i thank you Last edited by hovis; 07-01-08 at 08:48 AM. |

Swingarm out maybe, to get better access to the bolt?

That is going to be a right PITA
I'd remove the swingarm as a lump to get better access to it as pete mentioned. I'd use a very small welding tip on the oxy torch to take the hardness out of the allen bit then drill it for an extractor. Then you're back to the same situation, but go and buy an impact rated allen bit.

thanks for the picy pete i had a feeling you would be able to do it
![]() the allen key socket we snaped was snap on, i wanted to use an impact driver, but we ued a 2 ft breaker bar, while i hit the socket head with a hammer, the guy on the breaker bar is very strong. what about bluegas? if thats what its called |

Propane? MAPP gas? Not hot enough IMO
I'd use oxyacet, as you're trying to take the hardness out of the bit without putting much heat into the bolt and ally.

Plusgas penetrating oil?
Use it, tis good stuff, but won't do any good at all if theres still half an allen bit stuck in the head of the bolt. Just had a thought, you could try a pipe freezing kit and a punch to try shatter it out.

Possibly, depends how well you can localise the heat (well, lack of)
Or you could pour warm water down the shock to keep the bolt fairly warm. I've never tried this, so it could be a completely hair brained scheme. If you did shatter the bolt, then at least it would be free!
