Doing my own stuff now and just did an oil change amongst other things.
Now the sump drain bolt and the oil filter got me a bit troubled. Bolt torque is 23 then 32 and filter is 11-ish. But for both I found I could torque them up, get the click but then they would shift on again, then another click then turn ab bit more again etc. So getting tighter and tighter. I guess this is due to the crush washer and the filter gasket. Anyway in the end I just did them 'so tight' and hopefully not overtight. Whats the knack here? I probably should have stopped at the first click but the washer and gasket will bed wont they, or would they have bedded at the first click? I dont want to mess with it now otherwise to replace the plug will involve draining the oil and just slacking it will cause a leak now the washer is crushed wont it? I didnt do it 'real tight'. Just want to get it right next time. Last edited by the white rabbit; 24-02-08 at 07:36 PM. |

if you do the sump bolt real tight you're likely to screw the thread up as you have an aluminium thread and a steel bolt (unless you have an insert). If you have crushed the washer and given it an pinch more then that is usually ok, you don't need to over-tighten these.
Once done up run the engine and let it warm and give some pressur/revs - if it's oil filter is holding OK and you've done it up the right number of turns then I wouldn't worry. Did you smear the filter's gasket with oil first as the helps when you tighten it and seats it but its not essential.

Ok, that sounds ok then. I think the washer is pinched up a bit tight but its not stupid tight. Thanks.

Providing you have cleaned all the surfaces before refitting the filter and sump bolt you have a decent torque wrench and the settings are correct the first click is OK. I normally double click myself as this will only be a mininal increase but eliminates a sticky thread and not overtighten enough to damage any threads, seals or thrust washers
Check for leaks when hot and take two asprins for paranoid complex ![]() |

I used to double click, but I stop at the first click now and haven't, touch wood, had anything I've torqued up come undone (when it shouldn't!
