Default Can someone recommend a cheap laptop for my Sister

She's a total newbie and basically wants to go on-line, put her pictures on it etc. Budget is £350-£400. SHe needs a reasonable ISP too possibly with a free wireless router or the laptop price needs to be cheap enough to be able to buy one. I've had a look and the Dell seems ok. Oh yeah, it doesn't need to be mobile really.

Thanks.

BLIMEY! They can have a his and hers for that price! Any particular brand to go for? Suppose any one of them is ok for what they need. Is RAM more important than processor speed for pics and internet?

That ASUS one is on PCPRO's A-List... which is a great place to start!

I am a geek, so here’s my view:

The eeepc laptop from Asus is tiny. It has a 7inch monitor, and quite low specs (good for what it is, but in relative terms its limited). It also doesn't run windows by default (not necessarily a bad thing).

They are by all accounts fantastic machines and I will be getting one at some point to go travelling with but they are unavailable for love nor money until the end of march.

However if this is for home use I'd go for a laptop with at least a 13inch (or 15) display 17inch laptops are generally expensive and huge (but can be nice). Then you can get a nice big hard disk for all your digital photos and music collection to be stored on, along with the bigger display, faster cpu, more memory, etc.

My dad got an Advent laptop from Woolworths a year or so back, 15inch tft, windows XP good enough specs and most importantly cheap. I put a bit more memory in and hes got a great laptop (for general home use) for about 350 - 400quid.

Try to do some maths on a depreciation cycle (oh dear, im turning into my boss, but stay with me) A £200 might last a year or so before you want to upgrade, but a £400 laptop should be speced to last 2-3 years so its cheaper in the long term.

There is an eeepc forum here http://forum.eeeuser.com/ if you want to read more about the eeepc.

Dan

They (Sister, Bro in Law and Neice) can't really have a desktop due to space. That 7 inch one is a little too small I think. Yeah I reckon they'll spend ?350 on one and get a router with the rest. Is there a minimum strength of wireless built in for a laptop to be listed as having Wifi?
