Default SV650S K5 Misfiring?

Just got the bike back from its 1st MOT, was fine for first couple of miles then was sat at lights, went to pull away and bike stalled. Started back up but engine sounded really lumpy and when pulling back throttle, wasnt get much power at all. Then suddenly it would kick in, bike would shoot forward then stop again, kept doing this all the way home, not good!

Rang the garage and they didnt have a clue and they said it couldnt have been anything they did because all they did was check the bike over for its MOT

Any ideas what this can be? Engine cuts out every now and again when idle. Also cuts out sometimes when I go from neutral in to 1st, it just dies

Never had any problems with the bike before this, any help would be appreciated

Cheers

Sounds exactly like my 40mile trip in the rain on one cylinder last week. Going round a roundabout and all of a sudden it kicks in, then out again, not fun!
If it was in the rain you need a fender extender (I just got a pyramid one for 25 quid), spray some WD40 up the drain holes on the front cylinder.. if you want, take the front plug cap off and let things dry out a bit.

Could be cos of the rain but I've been out in it loads in the rain before, why would it suddenly start now?

Will take it out later or tomorrow if its dried up a bit and check it out.

My SV did loads of wet runs, then all of sudden it start playing up in the rain. One day it was fine next just wouldnt run at all.

Does sound to me like classic wet front plug syndrome. It wont dry out by itself you'll have to sort it out.

Personally I'd try and take the plug out and dry it before you ride it again, its f*cking scarey when its on one pot and then the 2nd one comes in and you have full power again, you dont want it doing that mid corner.

Its easy to do.

If you unbolt the bottom two rad mounts you can swing the radiator forward, which give you a bit more hand room. Then pop the HT lead off, use the spanner in the suzuki tool kit to get the front plug out. Dry the plug and lead off and then refit the plug, being careful not to cross thread the plug and dont over tighten the plug either as you'll strip the threads.

Re-fit the HT lead and make sure the rubber grommet pops back into the recess in the cylinder head. It'll make a pop when it goes back in.

Then on the RHS of the engine is a small hole shove a straw up that or squirt some WD40 up it and make sure its clear as this is the drain hole that should allow water to drain away if it does get down into the front plug hole.

You can either coat the HT lead with gloop from maplins or fit a fenda extenda which keeps the spray off the front plug. Have a search its been covered plenty of times.

It definately sounds like it's running on one cylinder, be that because of water or another reason.

I used to commute many many miles a month, and never had a problem with water. Then one day it started happening.

As well as water, it could be HT lead breakdown (which you can take the HT lead apart, chop the end off, then put it back together to cure), or it could be the ECU not giving the timing signal properly (which will require a new ECU).

Chances are, it's water though. Solved either by a fender extender, or some grease. For anyone near me, I still have a rather large tub of grease that I'll happily slap over anyone's front plug.

it will just happen on the random. Mine was fine for about three months before it started doing it.

Also if you put a bit of grease round the plug cap you'll be sorted. However as you'll be taking the plug out you may as well change it because misfiring doesn't do it any favours. And for the sake of ?4 you might as well.

Cheers for the advice people. Off to Maplins today to get myself sorted.

As I said, I'm a complete beginner, have no tools or anything!! Gonna get me some of this grease but also want to get some useful tools that I'm likely to need as time goes on.

What do you reckon I'm best getting to prepare myself for any more problems ahead or for doing my own servicing once I eventually teach myself? I'll grab it all at while I'm out later today

Everyone has to start somewhere!

Cheers
