Default Starcom Advice

Folks,

I've just managed to get a Starcom1 Advanced comms system from a mate who sold his bike. I plan to use it for bike to bike radio and sat-nav. The radio bit I have no problem with, but the sat-nav presents a bit of a problem.

According to the manual and Starcom tech support if you intend to plug in a device that runs from the same power source as the Starcom unit you have to use isolated audio leads at twenty-five quid a time.

Something to do with return DC differential paths or dylithium crystals or something.

Tech support say it "could" blow your sat-nav or your starcom and it "could" have buzzes and hums. So recommend an isolator lead rather than a direct cable.

Satnav will be powered through 12v supply from the bike as will the Starcom. Has anyone had a bike powered device connected (satnav, ipod etc) to a starcom through a regular patch lead and not had their system turn into a huge fire-ball?

Are the Starcom folks being over cautious or is it a genuine problem? I have loads of regular patch leads but don't really want to kill my satnav or starcom unit for the sake of a 25 quid lead.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Mark

You answered that one yourself there Mark. Go buy a lead. Chances are that if they're recommending it, it will improve the audio quality anyway. I'm using Autocom myself but I like the got it from a mate bit. Much cheapness - brill!
