Default Can you repair front fork corrosion?

I have seen a nice SV on here, a bit of a way from me but i am willing to travel if need be.

Trouble is - front forks are corroding, is this something that can be repaired easily?? Is it just surface corrosion that you get typically? I know its quite a common problem.

If it's just the fork lowers then yeah that's quite normal for SVs, well i've had that problem on all of my SVs. There are a few options to sort it
1, strip the forks apart and get the lowers powder coated
2, live with them as they are
3, polish them
4, get some spray paint from Halfords and spray them yourself

i'v done option 4 on three different SVs

yes alot of other sv owners have the same problem so dont really let it put you of the bike.

the best job if it would really bother you would probley be 2 have them powder coated.

I scraped all the old lacquer of with wet and dry, then polished them with solvo autosol. You have to polish them from time to time but they look a million times better than the corroded mess I had.

Strip and polish isn't hard, especially if you use some stripper to soften it first. Spray with laquer after you polish and it'll be maintenance free for another few years, you're making a rod for your back by leaving the raw ally exposed.

Thats the problem with the OEM finish, the lacquer pits and the forks start to erode underneath! Don't re-lacquer them just give it an occasional polish with Autosol and the problem will never return!

+1. That's what we do. Or wipe em down with a WD40 soaked rag. Anyway lacquering would dull the shine.

Agreed. I used belgum Alu polish. Much like solvo but has wax in it, so leaves a protective coating.
