I put a lighter spring on the rear when I had the swing arm off, gone from a 600 down to a 485 (thats on a sachs shock) and increased shock length by 5mm.
I had a quick play with the pre-load when I had 10 mins. Best I could get in the time allowed was 6mm bike, 34mm rider (from free sag) I was aiming for 10mm and 30mm. Questions:- Am I aiming for the correct sag? If so, would the shock length alter these relationships at all? If the figures I have gave are the best I can get, would I need a softer or stiffer spring to get a better pre-load setting? |

When you end up with low or zero bike sag to get the target rider sag that suggests the spring is too soft.
That sag is fine target to go for. shock length may change the leverage ratio slightly and change the front-rear balance a bit. Shouldn't make much odds where the preload lands though.
