Default trouble starting

could use some help here please. just bought a 2000 sv650. normally goes fine, but suffers problematic starting. Bike wouldn't start today. full choke seems to flood it. with no choke it doesnt get going either. half choke saw it start up once but as soon as I touched the gas or the choke it would cut out. after numerous goes, battery seems to have given up now.
1. garage isnt particularly cold so is full choke still needed?
2. is there a normal starting procedure re. choke?
2. is the battery dead once engine stops turning over, or can I hope and pray it will gain power again after some time left to recover from my onslaught.
3. a few weeks ago I experienced the same problem. The engine let out a loud bang misfire and finally started a few tries later.
4. what's the next step??

any ideas greatly appreciated.

after trying to start mine a few weeks back it wouldn't start for love nor money, after a quick charge some new plugs, full choke and NO throttle it started but had to leave it a few mins before i changed anything, and now *touch wood* it starts fine with just abit of choke .

Oh it also got treated to super unleaded.

if its the choke cables that are seized up, once your running it runs pretty lumpy too.

dizzyblonde, my previous bike was a Yam thundercat which was very smooth. I noticed the sv is lumpy, especially on a half open throttle. when asked around i was told its the character of a v-twin.. but now you're making me doubt this.

if you've looked after your choke cables, then thats one possible cause of of the window, the next one is to get your carbs balanced. I think mine run smoothly most of the time, although after this weekend I'm getting the chokes looked at, as one of my SVs is a bit lumpy and out of charactor, I'm pretty sure its one of the above thats causing it, as they haven't had either done for a while....it was 2 yrs ago that the chokes were given a good seeing to

What exactly does it do on half throttle?

My SV is running "lumpy" and balancing the carbs has no effect.
I checked the rear choke plunger and it looked fine but I have not looked at the front one as it's hard to get to.
Best get doing that and get it sorted for the better weather.
Dizzy do you recon this would fix an irregular idle?

I dunno.....lol. I would suspect, as its a long time since my chokes were seriously cacked up, that indeed it should fix it. You do need both free'd up, and its always the front one thats bothersome. SO actually very probably if you haven't cleaned em both up right
