SV650 99 Curvy (Major Problem?)

Not sure if you will remember but I'v been having problems with my clutch dragging and have adjusted everthing correct. I bought some new clutch plates etc but they sent me the wrong gasket so I can not do this just yet.

I thought ok I will get the correct gasket and sort that out but in the meantime I will clean all the pushrod etc and adjust it so it would be slack to see if that would work.

I took out my worm drive pushrod and some oil came out? Now this has not happened before and I started to worry. On firing up the engine with the rod out engine oil spews out of the hole.

Am I right in thinking some kind of bearing has gone or is it just a gasket somewhere that is letting oil through the hole from the clutch side?

Looks like I won't be using it to get to work on Monday anyways. Ideas and answers are very welcome at this time because I feel s*it after spending all day checking parts out and fixing my scotoiler.

There's plenty of places on the engine that will squirt oil out if you remove bits from them - you've just found one. And it's only to be expected, the mainshaft is hollow and supplied with oil, the seal is there to hold it in.

Put it back and as long as it doesn't leak when it's fitted then it's OK.

You have new friction plates? Unless they're somewhat warped, (very rare), they won't be the problem, same goes for the plain plates, (warped plains are more common). Drag caused by the clutch assembly itself is most commonly caused by a worn basket or hub.

Both of those do happen but a knackered lifter is still the number one cause of SV clutch problems by about a gazzilion percent.

Iv put the rod back in and dropped the bike down of it's paddock stand and all seems fine so big sigh of relief there.

I need to get the clutch casing off to check the plates and the hub but when you say clutch lifter do you mean the rod that goes into the worm drive?
Is it possible for that to wear down and make the clutch drag?

Yeah matey. Everything is adjusted up properly but it always drags?
It's a right PITA as It's always trying to edge forward when I'm at a stand still and makes getting into neutral a farse. I have to rev the engine a little so it slips and goes into neutral!

The lifter is the bit the lower end of the clutch cable connects to. Have you adjusted this? The cable adjusters only adjust the cable - that's NOT clutch adjustment.

Yep. I have adjusted the whole lot. I'm guessing the lifter is the worm drive that turns the movement of pulling the cable into the pushing force on the rod. This has been adjusted correctly

YC. I went to a suzuki dealer for my motor oil and they stated that it would be fine to use in my SV as they use it on all there workshop bikes.
It was something that crossed my mind though. When I come to checking the clutch plates I might just change the oil also, what do you think?

If it's overfilled it will drag.

Have you checked that the worm drive is in good condition? It's not at all unknown for them to self-destruct and then you lose a lot of the clutch pushrod movement.

It's a few minutes to just whip it off and take it apart. If it's in good nick then when you un-wind the housing from the lever it all stays together and you simply grease it up and refit. If it all falls apart you need a new one.
