Question backfiring

ive got a curvy '99 650s, it only had 800miles on the clock and its now on about 1600 i think anyway:

For some unknown reason it seems to backfire when i turn it off. i dont know if this is common and it doesnt happen always just sometimes (sometimes loud sometimes quiet). I cant seem to make a link to when it does and when it doesnt so im really confused...

any possible reasons/solutions

apart from not sounding great and being a bit embarassing is it actually a problem?

a big backfire pop when you turn it off is cool, enjoy it!
It when you turn it on an its scares the crap out of ya then cuts out while you dive on the floor next to your bike in the fetal position shaking like a ****ting dog that its embarrasing.

Is it an aftermarket can you've got on there?
Backfiring is usually excess fuel burning off or a maybe a loose joint in the pipework.
Does it only happen when turning the bike off or does it also do it on the over run?
If so i wouldn't worry about it.

When you say turning it off , do you mean via the key turn or the killswitch. What's your idle speed like/throttle tension. It's like it's popping just a little last bit of unburnt fuel getting through. odd. Mine pops flames at most start ups, but I've never had it when turning off. hmm. Does it do it at all whilst riding?

a 10 year old bike with 1600 miles on the clock..... nice

ok idle speed should be 1200-1300 when warm and choke off..

you should give the bike a good service as it sounds like its been standing doing nowt for a loooooooong time...
