hi,
quick question, not really related to sv's in particular, but the air box i have (as yet unfitted to the bike i'm putting together) has had at least 3 of the air breather holes capped. I would presume the same had been done on the engine outlets (2 breathers outlets from the base of both cylinders at least) of the bike it was attached to. Now, just wondered what the point was behind this? Seems to be a race mod, but to what purpose will this serve? thanks! ![]() |

i think only two are capped; a short one which acts as an oil catch tray and a longer one which stretches down a few inches and rests between the two cylinders.
please wait for one of the professionals for confirmation |

Probably all plugged up so as to route the engine breathers to seperate catch tank.

ok, to clarify the airbox was bought from a guy breaking an ex race bike, the 2 breather pipes i'm wondering about are the 2 that sit above the idle adjuster, they would normally run a hose to the base of each cylinder (as per my road bike), though have been capped. hope this makes more sense, thanks again!

Yes the breathers from the engine need to be run into a seperate catch tank then.

Mainly to prevent hot oily dirty air being vented into the airbox ensuring that clean cool air only is being mixed with fuel for the engine.
Breathers back to the airbox are intended mainly to reduce emissions to the atmosphere. |

You need to take the breathers up into a tank, if you just leave them then they'll fart oil out all over the place.

think you can buy or fabricate proper catch tanks but I've seen coke cans etc used for this kind of thing on race bikes.
YC, you got any idea how much improvement can be gained by a mod like this on the SV? Something I've never tried on a dyno. |
