I have a 2002 SV650s.
Up until about a week ago my bike always started first try. But now it normally takes two goes. From cold. First try I hit the ignition and it sound complete normal except it never actually turns the engine over. If I wait a 20/30 seconds and give it a second try it starts. And once started it idles as normal with the choke out “when just started” and fine in after it has been running for a minute when the choke is push back. I have notices any problems with power when riding either. I am new to bikes as I have only been riding since March and most of my trips are to work and back, around 5 miles each way. I am a little confuses as to where to start with diagnosing the problem. I figure if it was a straight starter or battery issues then it starting second time doesn’t really make much sense. From what I have read if it was a fuel pump, carb or spark plug issue then I would see some performance issue while riding. I’m open to any suggestion you guys have to figure out the cause of this. Thanks PS it’s about 1000miles since its last service. Which was in March. |

Does the starter motor spin over, but not turn the engine?

Yes, everything sounds normal except the engine never turns over.

Good morning.
Sounds like a dodgy connection on the starter button perhaps. Get some switch cleaner in there, & see if that cures it. Alternatively, it could be a poor connection on the starter solenoid. Follow the positive lead of the battery, this will yake you to the solenoid. Give all the connections on the solenoid a good clean. Cheers. |

If you can hear the motor spinning, but the engine not turning over, perhaps there is a problem with the starter motor, i think they have a clutch (correct me if I'm wrong stewart!) which could not be engaging first time around?

A starter spinning but not actually turning the engine can also be a sign of the starter being on its way out. but as said prev check the connections first, otherwise may be worth getting the starter motor checked over or re conditioned

Gotcha.
My starter solenoid/relay jammed itself shut back in april, left my engine turning over and over until the battery ran flat. 40p for a new one from wemoto. Normaly £40. My bike distracted the man at the desk ![]() ![]() |

blackj, please clarify, is it turning the engine on first attempt?
No it doesn't. Have you seen inside of an SV motor?
