Default Daft Bird Warning

Went out this afternoon (Sat) Going from Helmsley to Pickering.
They have released a load of pheasants into the wild, and they are not smart.

One took off from the right hedgerow. I picked it up as just a brown blur, had the missus on the back, so I gallantly whipped my head away. Unfortunately it copped an almighty wallop on my right shoulder, but I kept going (hard to stop at that speed ).

So be careful out there. Should have known as the road had loads of dead ones stuck to it.

BTW - looked down a minute later and the cheeky beggar was laid on my leg half tucked into the fairing - not moving much at all. I wafted it off. Not a good idea to have single birds hitchhiking with you ...

You're supposed to hang them till they go half rotten, then prepare/cook/eat etc. Otherwise the meat is very tough.

Yup......hang them by the feet to bleed them....all blood goes into head and neck (which aren't eaten but can be used for stock). You can hang them like this for a good ten days to two weeks and more in the right conditions.

Not quite sure why I know this, but AFAIK...

It is an offence to take home your own road kill. It is however, perfectly legal for the next person along to collect it.

Since the birdie went back on the busy road, the most you'll be able to do is use it as a pizza topping maybe?

Shoulder took the brunt at 60mph plus and not bruised at all ...
