ok, so i've been working on installing some heated grips to keep my mits warm on my morning rides.
i installed all the electrics, and then started to take off the original grips... 'wtf '... was my expression when i started to remove the rubber from the throttle tube. on the inner side there is a large tapered edge which will be preventing the new grips from sliding on fully (and on the outer side there is a small lip, but this wasnt a major concern). has anyone run into this problem? what did you do to get around it? thanks much |

yes 99.9% of throttle tubes are the same m8...i take off the lips with a dremmel, doesnt affect the throttle at all...if u havnt a dremel u can carefully cut the lips off with a knife etc

Unfortunatly you have to remove that end lip. The other taperd part close to the switchgear I did not remove, but you wil need some spacers for the bar-end weight so that the grip isnt rubbing against it.

Take a little look here and you will find photos of the full install on a K5:

Open them up a bit with a flat headed screwdriver, squirt some wd40 in there and wiggly it around twisting the loose part of the grip until it slides off easy.
Then you'll have to take the nylon lip off with a craft knife and sand the whole thing down a bit so the new grip slides over smoothly. There a couple of lips on the inside edge of the bar aswell, if your grips are like mine these will need attention as well. I took the first two off with a dremel and left the last one there. Grips fitted perfect, with the last lip providing tiny gap to stop it rubbing on the side. |

Thanks for the info guys. I finished installing them yesterday, and this morning the ride was nice and warm
![]() I did what MrFish suggested, and I cut off the the lip on the outer end and sanded down some of the ridges running along the length of the tube. I also decided the spend the time to remove most of the tapered edge on the inside of the tube. I didn't take any pics as i was pressed for time to finish the job, but i left a small lip so that the new heated grip didn't rub against the start button box. |
