Default SV buying advice please.

I'm helping my brother look for his first bike and naturally having started on an SV myself we are heading to look at one later but not sure what to look for! I bought new in 02 and only put 5000 fair weather miles on mine in 3 years so never experienced any problems myself.

Whats the going rate for 99/00 curvys? This particualr example we are viewing later has done 11000 miles and only had 2 owners and is a 99 S. Do the engines give problems with more miles, are they good on fuel, brakes seize etc.

Thanks in advance for your helpful responses.

I bought a Y reg with 18500 miles, in good condition but had been dropped so a few scraches on one panel. paid £1300. the engines are good but as with any vehicle will have problems if not looked after so you want to make sure its been serviced and generally looked after, valve clearances checked when appropriate etc.. I reckon i get on average about 40 MPG, and I do boot it around a bit. sure someone will be along shortly who knows more than me.

11000 mile is nothing, brakes and other bits i'd strip clean and rebuild ,not esentail but lets be honest when youve done it you know its done, id pay betwen 1k and 1.3k for a goodun. budget about 50 quid for oils lubes greases and filters and give it a good going over, also if its still on origanal chain budget 80 for new one with sprockets within a few months
hth
ps i once got 220 mile from a tank, which at the time was about £17.50

Depends on condition but I wouldn't want to spend more than £1200 on a 99/00 bike.

Low mileage can be just as bad to an engine as high mileage.

The engines are very reliable.
The later ones are better though, K1/K2 got better crankcase, early ones can be a bit sensitive to oil level. A few of them about with blown big ends.
They are good for 100k+ if looked after. (just book servicing, nothing special)

Brakes seize, but easy to service. They don't seize more than any other comparable bike.

They're OK on fuel. Bit thirstier than some, bit less thirsty than others. You can get 55+mpg on a steady run, or in the 20s if you go completely and utterly daft.

I bought a 99 curvey S earlier in the year with 23K on it. It's in great condition for it's age and has been heavily modded to a naked. The prices quoted here seem reasonable for a private sale. Dealers will want a bit more. Fuel consumption is a bit low IMO at 40mpg around town, although you will get more on a good run though.

Read the threads about what mods are recommended as you should ideally make a few to a standard bike.
