Default Inspirations for school lessons

Son No1 was learning about pirates not so long ago at school.
If only I'd have known all it takes is a letter to the best pirate of all, to come to school, the kids would have found the lessons much more interesting!

That's it, I'm writing to the BBC at once to say that my nephew really really wants to be a Time Lord and can they please send David Tennant round to my house to help him with his homework. Or possibly he wants to be a Jedi and they'll need to send me, sorry I mean my nephew, Ewan McGregor. Or an X-Man - mmmm, Hugh Jackman.

The only inspiration I had with my lessons was the foul breath of the penguin wielding the 3ft wooden rule. Telling me that I was going to hell.

You didn't want her, her manky breath or the 3ft rule any where near you. and woe be tied any poor sod who forget their pen (Not biro) and the ink well was filled and you were issued a scratchy nib and marked down for the quality of your hand writing.

Difficult to write neatly when the scratchy nib is blotting, your dripping blood from your knuckles and you just know the circle is about to turn again.

Yup! inspiration indeed.

Tell that to youngsters nowadays and they wont believe you.

Bloody luxury.

From Tim : nice but ( how does that one go ? )
" you were issued a scratchy nib "
at our fee-paying Borstal we trained a jackdaw to fly in & nick the nibs - no wonder I'm illiterate !

I'm not too young to remember learning to write with a fountain pen.
I learnt the art of Calligraphy when young.

These days they still write in pencil at Junior school, but alas proper tools are no more. They do try teaching kids joined up, but concentrate too much on it, rather than just getting them to write correctly.

Homework is issued at the end of each week. I am all for doing the maths, spellings and the like, what I don't like is getting random bits of 'research homework' that entails using a computer...all good if you have one.
In my day, homework was based on what you had learnt, and recall, so the teacher knew you'd been listening, not going onto googlefoo and finding out what sacred things are in a Synagogue, or finding out names famous native American Indians.

Can you imagine if celebs like Jonny Depp did this more often? It would certainly make kids perhaps want to learn.
Jet Li or Beckham doing a demonstration PE lesson, Jamie Oliver doing Home Economics(or whatever they call cooking lessons these days) or Bill Bailey getting kids into proper music via the art of comedy.

IF only!
