Default Bike won't start

Symptoms:
No fuel pump on ignition on. CHEC error sign on display. Engine will turn over with clutch pulled in but will not fire and continues to display CHEC.

What I've checked
1) Kill switch is 'on' and has been cycled a few times
2) Battery is good
3) All fuses check out fine with a multimeter, have swapped FUEL one for a replacement new one anyway and no change.

Last time I had this it was the FUEL fuse. Bit stumped as it isn't this time.

Any suggestions? Looking like I'm going to be spending a days holiday out in the rain trying to fix the bike!

Next thing I'll try is cuzzing out the wiring for the RH switch assembly to make sure that the kill switch is working.

Well that buzzes out fine. Next going to check the sensor that tells it whether it's in gear or not.

Quick search yeilds this:

- FI Fault Type 2 (as shown by flashing "FI" on the LCD). If this is the case DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START THE ENGINE. This is typically a failed injector (expensive).
- Low oil level (well, pressure). Don't attempt to start until you've resolved this.

In all cases, usually the red light (Oil/FI) will be on, so that's pretty useless.

Thanks collis.

The symptoms are the same if I take it off the sidestand and I've taken it in and out of gear a few times so it probably isn't the gear sensor. Still might as well buzz it to make sure. I'll check the FI indicator.

If I turn it over the oil/FI light goes out. There is no FI message on the LCD once initial power up is over.

I'd discount the safety cut-outs like side & centre stand if it turns over

Main thing to do is see if you can get the error code off the bike by putting it into "dealer service mode" using something really technical like a paperclip.

Can't remember what connectors are used, but a search should yeild positive results

Jambo

Edit: If the "CHEC" message is not displayed after power up then the above may not be useful.

Good point. Still it's given me something to do! Gear position indicator is fine.

I'll try dealer mode next.

On occasion when I turn the ignition on, my bike fails to make the whiny noise from the injector system and the display flashes "FI", but it doesn't always do it and doesn't display "CHEC" - I've only had CHEC showing if the kill switch has been accidentally knocked on!

Right, think I've sorted it.
Couldn't get the bike to go into dealer mode, which struck me as very odd (just continued to display CHEC). However, whilst having a rummage down by that connector, with the ignition on, the fuel pump primed! I could get the fault to come and go by wiggling the wiring harness in that area.

I suspected a chaffed wire but it appears to be the inline fuse fitted for the Datatool alarm. If I remove the fuse it replicates the fault. On closer inspection of the fuse holder the spade of the fuse was not fitted in the connector properly, but shoved in alongside it, making an intermittent connection.

If I now start the bike, and then remove that fuse, the engine stops. Going to make sure that, with the fuse fitted correctly, I can NOT replicate the problem before riding. Don't want the engine cutting out on me!

Fuse must have been like that for the last five years as I've never removed it. It had some signs of corrosion/arcing on it so it might be responsible for the blown FUEL fuse I had last year?

Anyway, I seem to have got there in the end.

Thanks for the replies.
