Default Daylight saving idea

Rebecca Harris MP is putting forward a Private Members Bill to change the way we use daylight in this country.
The basic suggestion is that the clocks will go back this Autumn to GMT as normal, go forward 1 hour next Spring as normal (BST) then stay there next Autumn, so that we stay at GMT+1. There is also the possibility of going to GMT+2 in the next Spring.

Now I quite like the idea of more light later in the day in the Winter evenings, but I'm not sure about going to work early in the mornings in the dark for more weeks of the year. And that's without thinking beyond myself, in terms of other workers, children and energy saving.

What do you think?

No it's been discussed and even done before. I was trying to find the details, but I think in the 70's it was put to the test for a couple ideas. I'm still looking for more info on that

I understand that, but what time do they go to school? At the moment many kids go home in the dark.

yes but they are going home before rush hour, while kids in the morning are going to school in the rush hour, well actually about the time people are running late and taking risks.

So you don't take your kids out in the dark then?

Change it! Its pointless living on farmers time when we don't need to.

So you want it to be dark even longer in the mornings? Sod that. It serves no purpose.

Some of us get up at 6am, It is so noticeable how long we have to wait before it starts to lighten up and I for one am looking forward to the clocks going back. Stupid Stupid Stupid idea to suggest we should be permanently GMT+1.

Won't get it past the farmers unions as they want sun light in the early morning when they are working in the summer

I remember the trial back when I was a sprog. In the south I don't think it's an issue, the further north you go the more it's perceived as a problem.

Whatever the clocks say there's still the same hours of daylight, it's really a question of what times people do their business, but that's another issue.

I've often thought about the clock change thing, I would just like to see the winter time (GMT) shortened. Instead of "end Oct-end Mar" or effectively 5 months, it'd be nice to go from mid Nov to mid Mar, so reducing it to only 4 months. That would not change things dramatically for anyone but the perception of a shorter winter gloomy time would be a welcome benefit I reckon. If that worked OK, maybe it could be shortened even further, say 3 months.
