Default Cam chain tensioner question

So I'm looking at replacing the CCT and had a few questions (apologies if they're stoopid...but every day is a learning day right?):-

As I understand it, the CCT basically pushes against the CCT slider to tension the cam chain. If the engine is rattling like Wayne Rooney in an old people's home, it could be that the CCT is stuck and therefore not putting pressure on the slider?

What if the CCT is fully extended, does that mean that the cam chain needs replacing (assuming the rattling is from the cam chain)?

How can I be sure that the CCT has failed/stuck?

Am I right in thinking that K5 you can't check it's stuck, you just have to take it out (at which point it would fully extend anyway presumably)?

If it is stuck, then does it need replacing or just cleaning/re-seating?

If I do replace it (I've bought a new one anyway, so might as well), do I have to follow the Haynes manual to the letter (ensuring the engine is at the right stroke) or can I just whizz the old one out and bang the new one in?

What other issues should I be aware of and should I really be checking the valves first?

I bought one for half price on the BOTM offer (there's a thread about it), just need to know how to fit it.

No, THE CCT for the CX650 is between the V, SV's CCT is on the outside of the engine and easily accessible.

So as far as I'm aware just unbolt the current CCT & replace. But I need to check the Haynes for futher proceedures.

rubbish-while it is easier with the engine out it doesn't need to be removed-a little knowledge is dangerous.

Tensioner is a ratchet with a spring behind it.

If you take spring out before removing tensioner you can see how far extended it is. Spring is simply behind bolt on top of tensioner.

You can do this at any stroke IME but safest way is to ensure it is at TDC compression.

When you've taken it out inspect all teeth on ratchet mechanism. Or just replace and see if it cures it, up to you.

On 1gen some rattle is normal. Not so much on these though. Also tensioner blades can snap little nipples off that they pivot in and cause a rattle, this means taking cylinder off which is a ball ache.

You can take valve cover of and turn motor by hand while watching tensioner and feeling chain to see if it is lose.
