either a bad earth leakage or your reg/rec isn't working, do a search as the testing for both has been well covered already.
Cheers Mark.

Once you get it started can you use it normally? Can you use the lights and it still goes? If it runs with a push but won't start then it's probably charging - if it wasn't there'd be no supply and the motor would stop.
Check the battery first.

mine has done exactly the same thing
sunny sat morning got the bike out went to start it and nothing, jumped it started, thought right go for a longish ride get some charge back, went for a 45min ride slow bits fast bits ect. looked down petrol light flashing, filled up payed the man hit the start button and nothing just a bit of clicking from the starter, w**ker, rang the misises to come and give me a jump. 10mins later jump the bike starts fine. rode home 3 miles swithed it of and pushed it up the garden path, just about to put it away and thought i wonder if it will start and guess what the stupid thing starts on the first push of the button. so new battery poss. the one on the bike has all the suzuki marks and made in the usa on it, is this an oem one? as above when its running everything works as it should |

Having ridden a curvy for a few thousand miles and over a number of winters I can tell you the electrics can be a bit of nightmare. But if you start looking at key things then you should be able to figure it out.
As mentioned above the first thing to check is your battery to make sure its hold a charge or getting a charge. If you have a Haynes manual it tells you in there how to test the charging circuit going through all the tests to make sure its right. Don't just change the battery, make the checks first as you could have a duff reg/rec or anything. As I've seen the following - Duff battery. Duff Regulator/rectifier. (over or undercharging). Duff Alternator. Rusted/Rotted loom. Dead signal generator. Dead CDI. |

That indicates that the battery is receiving charge, and that the alternator, wiring and regulator-rectifier are most probably OK. There is one possible problem that could still be amongst that collection, but with the symptoms as you describe them, by a large margin the fault most likely lies with the battery itself. This is particularly likely if the bike was unused for a while, and if it was fine before being unused - batteries like to be kept in use.
