Hi guys two questions for you.
First one - To those of you on a restricted SV, I think this will only be relevant to the ones restricted by ECU, when you are trying to go fast, or overtake something, at what revs do you normally shift at. I'm wondering because I'm sure my bike feels faster in the lower revs than the higher revs, so I don't normally do more than 6 or 7k. I think this might be because the bike is restricted to 33hp, and hp = torque x revs so the higher the revs, the less torque you have. Second one - I noticed my temperature today was jumping all over the place every two or three seconds it would jump by a few degrees as in 89, 87, 84, 81, 80, 81, 86, 90 And then back down again. Is this normal? Thanks. |

i've no idea about the temperature thing cos i've got a curvy n therefore don't have a digital temperature gauge. as for when to shift i never looked at the rev counter to see when to shift up, i did it by noise and feel. basically, if i was really going for it i'd give the full beans and wait till i could feel the bike start to loose breath as it were and would then change up without the clutch to try and keep things speedy.

it would start to lose breath the higher up the revs due to the way the restriction works. Yeah thats fine, the temp changes rapidly whilst you're riding, in traffic etc etc. it generally averages around the late 80's

Restriction comes off in March anyway, and I'm off to uni so I won't be using it much till then.

Few days late, but heres my input ;p.
I change gear at around 8k rpm since the restrictor drops the power off at 8,500. Also I think that's normal with the temp, mine does it all the time. I expect it's were you're doing different speeds, going into a cooler part of the road e.g under tree's. |

8k, interesting.
I thought the restrictor kicks in at 5k. as that's where the bike makes 33hp: ![]() My bike feels pretty dead at 8k. As for the temperature, this was at the same speed, in the same gear, on a flat. Could have been the trees affecting it. I've not noticed it doing it before, and I haven't been anywhere on my bike since then. I'll have to check it next time I ride it, Which will be 16th October - Hogging the Bridge. Anyone else coming? I went last year on my 125 and it was really good, not to mention its for a good cause. |

Is your SV a curvy model or pointy?
Flat out in top gear on my pointy is 8.5k rpm @ 104mph (Indicated). It won't pull past 8,500 rpm in 4th, 5th or 6th but will in the lower three gears. I'm assuming the power drops out because that's what I got told when it was put on. It certainly feels like the power drops off at that RPM range though. EDIT: Also, my temp changed all the time. It's a pointy. I just found that dyno map on google images.
I think the reason you're not getting past 8.5k in top is because the air resistance at that speed is equal to the force of the engine. Meaning you can't accelerate any more. Whereas in the lower gears, you aren't travelling as fast, and so air resistance is less and you can keep accelerating past 8.5k. |

My K3 is restricted, this means I change gear more often and am generally in a lower gear when accelerating to join the motorway. Gear shifts are higher in the rev range due to lower gear. Once at speed I will changing from sixth to fifth and even occasionally into forth when I need to pass a slow moving truck on the motorway, passing while going up hill is hard work at times. Very rarely do I need to worry about high revs when riding about town, thirty three brake is more than enough for every day riding around here.
My temp range for the K3 varies with riding type and weather conditions. As long as it is not heading past the hundred mark by too much, do you need to worry? |
