i got a 61 plate sv650s, 2mths old. to start it when cold, its just turn ignition on(i wait 5 secs for the pump to prime and go quiet) then just press the start button, no throttle and it fires up and fast idles for about 15secs then it comes down to a more normal idle. When warm i use a little throttle and it fires up sharpish and idles at normal speed. If your having trouble just starting it id say there is something wrong as being injection it almost does it by itself.

When it is cold I find I have to hoild the starter button in for a second longer than I think I need to. It seems that when I do this she starts first time no problem. If I dont she stalls and then is a little harder to restart often needing a little throttle as encouragement.

try a little throttle when cold, or just a little longer on the button. should work out as they are sturdy bikes.

Does the fuel pump prime properly?
Have the spark plugs been renewed regularly?
Has any work been done on it recently?
Have you filled it up elsewhere recently?

If you've just bought it, then you won't really know when the plugs have been changed. I'd start with new plugs, presuming it's fresh petrol, and the air cleaner is o.k. As far as flooding is concerned it shouldn't happen, as it's fuel injection, the ECU should regulate how much fuel it squirted in at startup.

An obvious one (for SV owners) but make sure you pull in the clutch when you start it - they don't start unless you pull in the lever

I know I had the embarrassment that I couldn't start mine when I first went to ride away...
