Well I'm not having much luck at the moment........
Had many a woe in the last couple of weeks with starting my bike and 3 days after an overnight charge with one of those optimate chargers the battery was flat again. I thought "F**k it" and bought a new battery (12v 10A Varta one as I could add the acid and ride away as I needed transport) - anyway I digress. Cut to just ONE DAY later... I go out to Homebase as one does after work (it later transpires that the wife had actually bought what I was after and I didn't even need to go)..... all is fine. Needed some fuel, so I stop and fill up. Go to start the bike - nothing but the click of the solenoid. "FFS" is what I thought. so, seat off, checked connections to battery, lights were bright (so not the battery I thought), but not a peep from the starter. not even a vague whiff of action. ****ted it a few times with my set of allen keys... nothing... over an hour later I managed to pick up enough paddle speed to bump start it ("F****** YES!") So I'm after a Starter motor for a K6 if anyone has one knocking about... Seen a couple on Ebay from some K9's (seems to be the same part number) for around £60... thought I'd try here first. (had a look in stuff for sale, but didn't see anything recent) |

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Try this guy, he's an SV breaker.

It may not be the starter. There could be a number of reasons why the starter wont turn over. It's more likely to be a solenoid without having issues with the starter before, you also need to check all your fuses. Starters rarely completely fail to start with.

I did notice however after about 30 mins of trying to bump start the starter motor was quite warm.. not sure if that means it was stuck "on" (or if it means anything at all). tried the starter as I was riding home just to see if I could hear anything... other than my lights dimming nothing happened (clutch in and out). Also tried it when I parked up, solenoid still clicking but no cranking noise. Last edited by theCave; 17-12-12 at 10:41 PM. |

Do you have anyone you could ask to take a look who has some mechanical experience? There are a few tests you can do to check the relevant parts so you don't end up spending money on parts you don't need. My money would be on the solenoid, clicking or not, but I have been known to be wrong on occasion!

SV Manual in phone I took the starter motor off (after running it by a machanic at my local service place who did a quick test and confirmed my suspicions - he tested the battery sending voltage to the starter.). I then took it apart and it appears to be the brushes (I actually took it apart outside the service place lol).

Have you tried svspares? He's just up the road from me and has been really helpful to me in the past (he has a rather old school curly mullet though!)

I called him this morning and he'd just had a starter come in from another SK6. I declined purely because the starter on my bike is already a replacement and I didn't want to spend money only to have to spend money again.
I called the guys who i've got my service booked with, and got them to order from whoever their distributors are.... I used the part numbers from the "genuine parts spares list" in this forum. I actually c***ed up and only gave him 1 part number whereas there seem to be 3 parts (so I called him back with the other part numbers). He got a little pi**y on the phone about it as if it were a huge hassle. Since I was outside his shop hours earlier taking my starter apart and him checking if he had the part in stock, he knew I was a noob and probably should have checked himself. Hopefully I have ordered everything needed... need the wheels over Christmas! Alternatively, I was told by someone else the starter from a Bandit would fit if I changed the end cap, does anyone know if thats the case? (which he actually has in stock) |
