Whe you switch on ignition, you get a whirring noise as electroncs go through some sort of initialisation.
After about 3 seconds, all noise stops, you start bike and off you go. I started bike last night, first time in January and the whirring does not stop. I started bike and let it run for a minute. I switched off and on again and again the whirring continues. Anyone with any thoughts. The bike is Gladius 650 2010 with 4000 miles on clock. SMcG in now snowy Glasgow |

It's the fuel pump. It will run pretty much all the time the engine is on, and pressurises the fuel system when you switch on, ordinarily it will stop whirring after a few seconds as the system when not running doesn't depressurise that quickly.
Does it stop whirring when you have the ignition on, but the 'stop' switch off? If yes, then it's not doing anything it shouldn't.

Thanks for this.
It stops when kill switch pressed. Obviously it did not used to do this, hence my concern. Maybe after a run it resume 'normality' If not, I may come back for more thoughts SMcG |

The noises are the petrol pump.
on initial turn on it runs to prime the injector . if the ecm does'nt detect the engine revolutions it then shuts off the feed to the pump. If its a bike with a power valve , they also go through a test cycle too.

Its probably low on fuel and the pump can`t raise the pressure ...put some fresh fuel in, as the old fuel will start to go off.

Don't Panic.
It kept running with the FI light on? Check the basics like good connections on the battery and good connection to the engines sensors. so check the TPS and engine temp ones haven't got corrosion from all the salt that's been spread about. Are You happy to go in to the self diagnostic mode(Dealer Mode). To swithch modes Your need to find the plug and insert the special tool ![]()

very much doubt that it's the pump as the pump is almost impossible to hear unless you ear is up against the tank.
my suspicion is that the stps is not setting and is continuing to try and set. stps sounds like buzzz buzzz. if it's just gong buzzzzzzzzzzz then i would lift the tank and take the top off the airbox then take the filter out once that has been done turn the bike on and look at the two discs at the mouths of the TB's. they should open then close when you turn the bike on. if they do indeed open then close but you still get a buzzing then turn bike off and disconnect the STPS and try again. if the buzzing goes away then you have a faulty STPS or it needs setting. |
