Default Lost 1st gear

Ladies and gents I've lost first gear. If bike is in neutral it will downshift to first but when coming to a stop it will openly refuse to go into first gear. The lever travels all the way down and there is no clunk. It doesn't feel like its trying to engage its like there is nothing there and its travelling past first without engaging.

So I'm currently pulling away in second. I've also found that if in second and have give it some throttle it will then downshift to first.

Have adjusted clutch cable so it can't be that. I've also just changed oil and its only started happening after that, though as the cause i'm doubtful.

Ideas?

also chech chain tention. the oyher thing you could try is whilst trying to select first ie hold your foot on the lever slowly release the clutch lever slightly that sometimes doesit, obviously hold the brake at this point also. and dont feed the clutch all the way out

Try also rolling the bike back or forward a bit with your right foot while trying to click down into 1st with the left. a foot or so of travel should be fine, gearboxes can be sensitive to chain tention and you may find this rolling solves it. Also try and get into the habit of changing down while still rolling up to the place you intend to stop rather than trying to change once you're stationary.

... also, sounds like you might have overfilled the oil! Check it very carefully!

Its Semi, still 10W40 but seems a lot thinner viscosity than the stuff I was using before. Castrol GTX from Morries at just £9.99 for 5 litres.

I do, and it won't find first! I end up stopping in second and pulling off in second

Chain tension is fine though I could have overfilled on the oil, I shall check this later. Im really thinking physical damage as this has never happened before - it seems to be travelling past first.

Sounds like the clutch adjustment to me.

Try adjusting more slack in to the lever and see if that solves the problem.
