Default is it worth fitting a K&N????

before anybody says to, i have searched....... honest....

i see people "de-snorkel" and fit kand n filters...
whats a "de-snorkel" then????

i know that on a car all a k & n really does is makes a racket......

would i see any easy gains here?
or am i far better off leaving it as suzuki made it.

p.s. mines a 1999

If you mean the race K&N then it's only worth fitting if you're prepared to rejet the carbs. Not doing so will make it run like a dog. I think they do three types and the non-race should be okay but certainly won't add to the performance as it merely emulates the standard Suzuki one.

K&N only do one for the SV, it's not very good. You might get away with no rejet but I wouldn't want to myself. Certainly not worth it for peak power, but a filter and good rejet does do a bit for engine responsiveness and broadens the power curve, which is nice. Could pove expensive to set up, though.

If you want to go for actual power and big improvements, you need to look at a full system and either a BMC Race RS or desnorkelled stock filter (the yanks love the desnorkel, nobody here seems to have made it work IIRC- I'll give it a crack when the bike's getting dynoed.) Big bucks though, I've done it but unless you just like modifying bikes it's a waste of money IMO.

Desnorkel means two different things... On the K3> it means removing the snorkel, which is basically an air intake pipe I think. On our bikes, it means cutting out the middle of the stock filter (or a K&N for that matter). Google for snorkelectomy and see what you can see.

Just to add that if you have a fuel injected SV, the you'll need a remap or power commander.

it's worth fitting because it's washable. The last air filter you'll ever buy.

I'm still on the original air filter on a 99 bike with 12,000 miles.

I check it every service and it still looks ok.

I think the K&N is a waste of money only bought by poseurs.
The difference it makes is very small in the real world.
