Default Gear (neutral) problem...

Hey All,

Had a weird problem my bike last night...

When putting it into the garden I accidently knocked it into first. After that it would not go into neutral whilst the engine was running. Checked the clutch cable adjustment and it was fine, but still no neutral when running. Was really difficult to get out of first and just went straight into 2nd, and from second dropped (easily) straight into first.

Came out this morning and seems fine again...

Any ideas where the problem could be?

TIA

Stu

If its any help,

Is the bike new? i found when mine was new i had the same problem would only go into neutral when the engine was off, or first thing before a ride,
After an oil and filter change all was ok, also sprayed lube over the gear linkage and that seemed to work,
Is the gear linkage to tight/loose

Hope that helps, (sorry if it doesnt )

Check your clutch cable is adjusted correctly (using the screw thing under the rubber cover on the clutch lever) it being a bit loose can cause the symptoms you describe.

Thanks people,

Well I suppose it's about due for an oil filter service so I'll give that a go...

I checked the adjustment on both the lever and under the plate at the back. As far as I can tell it's okay. (any definitive methods for when it's okay apart from byte point? - Also where should the bite point be?)

Weirdest thing is after spedning 1/2 hour looking at it last night to no avail, this moring it seems to be working a treat. Hate intermittent problems...

don't forget the screw drive that does the clutch push, if it gets dirty, grease dry's up or the bearings go then it could well be playing up. Making selection difficult.

OK assuming I am looking at the right hting here (when you pull the clutch it turns and goes 'into' the engine) it seems to be smooth enough. Should I grease this when I do the service, or is it a sealed item?

Thanks

Yup it comes of and does need greasing, I should be in the manuals... if you have one. Its fixed with 2 bolts and then just slides on the clutch push rod, don't loose the spring.

Cheers, I'll have a look at the manual when I get in... If I can find the box it's in... (Amazing how long it takes to unpack once you are 90% moved into a house...)

I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend then (weather permitting...)

It's not an intermittent problem, its a trait of bike transmissions period.

with over 100k, theres still an occasion, I am fumbling for neutral, like already posted, clean linkage will prevent most of it, but it's just like finding an occasional false neutral between gears. every once in a while it happens
