Default Coolant levels on a Pointy

did a search and only found stuff on curvies...

i have a pointy k3

Question part 1:

basically, how do i know when my coolant is low? where is the sight glass thing for it? at this point any pics would be appreciated.

i basically found a new resevoir bottle thingy and it seemed low on whatever goes in it, i believe it to be coolant but am not sure.

Question part 2:

am i ok to just top up the coolant with some of the halfords premix stuff? the bike is only 3 years old with 9000 miles on it, so can i avoid a full system drain?

Thanks
Paul

Pop it on a paddock stand and lift the tank. The resevoir is on the LHS of the tank and it capped with a rubber bung.I have had to added the grand total of 50ml after 14,600 miles on my K5

I don't think I have ever met anyone who has drained the system. All system can take the same premix stuff, or if it is only a minor top up (L to F is minor) then purified water will do.

not sure, thats why i wanted to know where to look (whether this bottle i found is the coolant)

also my engine was replaced at a garage (blew up ) so they may have not filled it fully, rather than it using loads.

Would your engine run hotter if your coolant was buggered? As I have my K3 has benn running hotter than normal.

Don't want to say as it isn't that hot... 89-97 Although you could put it down to the humid weather.

Does coolant deteriorate? And or there any point in replacing it periodically?

I changed my coolant after 2 years as recommended. I don't know whether it needed it or not - but I assume it deteriotes given this timescale. Premixed coolant costs very little so why not.

If you do it, then you quickly realise why nakeds are better the radiator filler cap is underneath the fairing on the right-hand side, which you have to remove to get to.

It's not really a difficult job to do, and quite useful because you will learn a little more about your bike which in my mind, is always a good thing.
